Proterozoic

Age Interval:
Lower Proterozoic (?), U5

Province:
Ustyurt-Sultanuzdag

Type Locality and Naming

In the Karakuduk area, upper reaches of the Kazansai, Sultanuizdag Ridge. A.A. Kuvem, D.A. Rubanov et al. in 1958, as [text unclear] Karatau Formation, was renamed as the Karakuduk Formation (508, p. 56). Lowermost formation in Sultanuizdag Gr

Synonym: Karakuduk Topitsa, Каракудукская т.

Lithology and Thickness

Garnet and garnet-free amphibolites and crystalline schists of quartz-biotite-garnet and quartz-mica-feldspar composition with layers (?) of mica quartzites and marbles. It includes picrites (komatiites), serpentinized dolerites and basalts, transformed into plagioclase-actinolite-amphibole schists (165). Thickness 400-450m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy_claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Schematic stratigraphic column indicates this is the oldest unit.

Upper contact

Schematic stratigraphic column indicates the upper contact as Urusay Fm with erosion

Regional extent

Consists of separate blocks and plates within the serpentinite mélange in the northern part of the Sultanuizdag Range, exposed over a distance of 35 km.

Age

The early Proterozoic age is conditionally established by comparison with the Uchkuduktau and Madjerum suites, S. Tamdytau and S. Nuratau. M.A. Akhmedjanov et al. (75; 77) consider the age of t. conditionally early-middle Proterozoic, comparing it with formations of the Uchkuduktau (S. Tamdytau) Fm. S.S. Shulz (508) and in the Strat. vol. (441) conditionally refer the suite to the Devonian. K.A. Keshishyan et al. (1995ф.) assign it a conditionally middle-late Devonian age based on geological position, in the monograph (165) - early Proterozoic; on the State Geol. Map-500 of Uzbekistan (460) - conditionally Proterozoic within the Sultanuizdag Gr.
